Back to reality

Tuesday, January 19th

Avery has continued to do very well since her MRIs. We went to clinic Wednesday, January 6th to check her counts. Her ANC and hemoglobin were holding pretty steady, and her platelets were just above the threshold. We gave one more Neupogen injection , and then a few days later headed south to Disney World to celebrate finishing radiation and good scans! We planned this trip after her second round of chemo, and prayed that things would work out and allow us to go.

We camped at Fort Wilderness and spent 6 whole days in the parks. We had an absolute blast! Avery was finally tall enough to ride all of the rides, and she rode every single one of them. The speed, darkness, and sounds that scared her the last time we were at an amusement park(2 years ago) were all the things she loved on this trip! We played hard all day, and she usually fell asleep in the stroller, boat, or golf cart each night on the way back home.

We kept a close eye on signs of low platelets, nausea, hydration, and pain. We were ready with supplies for almost all occasions, but thankfully nothing was needed. We may have gotten on Avery's nerves quite a bit checking on her, but she felt great the entire trip!

Disney did an excellent job with all of their precautions and safety measures! We felt safer at Disney than we have anywhere we have been close to home. The weather was perfect as well!

We appreciate the girls' teachers, our coworkers, and families who all worked with us to make this trip possible. The week flew by, and we had to come home way too soon. For Shon and I, this was probably the most difficult trip to see end. Our 2 week break from the hospital(the longest since our trip out West) was not long enough. The cancer and thoughts of cancer never truly went away on our trip, but coming home brings back the harsh reality of what comes next... chemo and all the things that an active fight entails.

Avery returns to clinic tomorrow to check her counts and hopefully begin her next round of chemo. Our goal is for her to receive this chemo regimen for 12 cycles(months) as long as her body can tolerate it. We know there will be bumps and delays along the way, but our goal is to keep the cancer at bay as long as possible(if not forever)

Please continue to pray for:

- Improved counts to begin chemo asap

- Minimal side effects

- Protection from germs and illnesses
