Count Recovery Day 5

Wednesday, October 14th

It was another long night for Avery. She finally fell asleep around 11:45pm, only to wake up in pain again at 1:30am. It was not time for her pain medicine yet, so she whined and whimpered until she fell back asleep. She received pain medicine close to 3 which allowed her to rest until 8am. Even while she slept, she continued to cry out off and on all night.

Her platelets were right at her threshold, so she received a transfusion today. Her ANC has risen to 20. All of her other labs looked good, and her cultures are still showing no growth. They changed her oxycodone to be scheduled every 4 hours with IV morphine as needed for breakthrough pain. They also added another medicine to try and reduce the cramping and spasming that is occurring, because the pain meds will not eliminate that. She is in a great deal of pain overall. The spasms maker her cry out while awake and asleep, and the stomach tenderness makes even getting out of bed to walk to the bathroom a 15-20 minute ordeal filled with tears and screams.

The combination of pain meds, lack of sleep, and Benadryl(for platelets) finally took their toll, and she was able to take a nice long nap this afternoon.

Her feeds have been completely off for 24 hours now for bowel rest. Given that and that she has only been on half feeds most of the week, she is finally complaining about being hungry. The problem with that is that nothing sounds or tastes good.

She remained fever free all day until about 8pm when she spiked to 101. The fevers only seem to intensify her pain and make her feel miserable.

We are anxiously awaiting those counts to start going up which is the only thing that will give Avery full relief from her pain.
