Day 3 - Cycle 1

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Friday, September 13th

Today didn't look any different than yesterday medically wise. Avery received the same meds in the same order and quantity. Unlike yesterday though, once she woke up this morning, she didn't sleep a wink until 10 pm tonight.

She had fun playing with games, painting, watching movies, and all the activities you could think of to pass the time. We walked down to Children's Harbor this afternoon and played Bingo and the claw machine which was a nice break from our room. All of the staff have been wonderful at Children's, but our nurse today was just exceptional. It took some time, but she seemed to form a connection with Avery which will hopefully make our stay this time and in the future more comfortable for her.

Avery received a "Chemo Duck" today equipped with his own Magic Button and Noodle(aka Port and Central Line). She spent a good part of the day taking care of Quackers(as she named him) injecting medicine and taking his vitals. Towards the end of the day, this coping mechanism made a huge difference in her cooperation.

Tomorrow, she will receive high dose Methotrexate beginning at 8 am. This will be the last of her chemo drugs for a few days, and this is a pretty tough drug. Please pray for no mouth sores(a common side effect), no liver damage, good blood counts, and for her to continue to gain trust with the staff.

I love the idea of the little duck; just the friend she needs at this scary time! Your bravery also gives her strength, and I am sure while you are smiling on the outside, your heart is quivering inside. Your faith, all the prayers for Avery and your family, and God himself will pull you guys through this horrible time. I am grateful she is bonding more with the staff; this will give her the courage she couldn't find before! Being little and sick is so terrifying!! Prayers for you today and every day; thank you for sharing your journey Lori Beth! Btw, Susan Boggess Jarmon is a friend of mine from high school! She told me that yo…
