Day 4 - Cycle 2

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Saturday, October 5th

Our sweet girl had another rough day today. Shortly after she woke up, she got sick. Her stomach was empty since her feeds have been so low, that she had nothing to throw up which made it even tougher. We upped her feeds to 20mL per hour. The thought process was that if she was going to get sick regardless, it might be better to actually have something in her stomach. She has tolerated that pretty well for the past 12 hrs, so we may look at bumping them up a little more tomorrow. She got sick 2 more times over the course of the day which is about the same as yesterday.

Her blood cultures from the other night(after she spiked a fever) came back as Gram-positive cocci. Although this does not tell us much, it tells us that she has some unwanted bacteria. She has been started on two antibiotics to help fight this. One is administered every 8 hours, and the other every 24hrs. They will continue to do blood tests everyday and keep a close check on her temperature.

The stomach cramps and diarrhea that plagued her last cycle seem to have come back. They seem to be a little less intense this time, so we are hoping she can recover quickly, and that things do not continue to escalate.

Avery tolerated the methotrexate well while it was being administered. They will keep a close eye on her PH levels and electrolytes over the next few days. She will start Leucovorin tomorrow to combat the harmful effects of methotrexate. Her body will have to clear the methotrexate before we are given the green light to go home.

I had plans of watching soccer and shopping for Halloween costumes this morning while Shon played with Avery, but Ella spiked a fever last night which changed everything up. The Dr said she just had a virus, and she has been fever free all day, so hopefully there is nothing more to worry about. Shon was still able to take the girls to get Halloween costumes and buy a birthday present for a friend... which I know made their weekends! They are Daddy's girls through and through so any one-on-one time is gold for them.

The girls were supposed to go to the Legion FC game with a friend and her family, but Ella was out since she had been sick. Luckily(thanks to Shon), I was able to take her place and get a little time away. We had a great time minus the rain and lightening!

Our focus the next few days is strictly recovery. Although today was a struggle for Avery(and all of us), we will still able to coax a few smiles out of her. We hope to see many more of these smiles in the coming days!

Please continue to pray for:

- GI issues to subside

- Antibiotics to get rid of the unwanted bacteria

- Safely and quickly clear the methotrexate
