Day 4 - Cycle 3

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Saturday, November 9th

Avery had a rough day today battling with a lot of nausea and vomiting. She spent the majority of the day sleeping due to all the meds to help the nausea.

Her magnesium and hemoglobin were both low. She was able to get a mag bolus prior to chemo, but we had to hold off on the blood transfusion until tomorrow. With only a single line, we couldn’t do both the blood and Methotrexate as they both take about 4 hrs to administer. We had the option of starting a secondary IV but chose to hold off to eliminate an additional poke(and trauma).

She received the Methotrexate from 10-2. During that time she spiked a temp of 102. They started her on Cefepime(antibiotic) and took blood cultures. They will watch the cultures for growth over the next few days. They run urine tests after Methotrexate to test her pH and specific gravity. Her specific gravity was a little high, but she’s maxed out on fluids so they’ll continue to keep a close eye on it. They will begin checking her Methotrexate levels and administering Leucovorin tomorrow morning.

After Avery went down for the night, the dreaded diarrhea we experienced the previous cycles returned. This resulted in a linen change, clothes change, and a wipe down with bathing wipes and a warm wet wash cloth during the middle of the night(which she handled fairly well). Unlike the last cycles though, we have Imodium ordered as needed. Hopefully this will help nip this in the bud.

Please continue to pray for:

- No more nausea, vomitting or diarrhea

- No growth on blood cultures

- Quickly clear the Methotrexate

- No more fever

She certainly is a warrior in God's army! I cannot imagine how hard on her this is, but I am so glad she has her parents and grandparents with her sisters who can love her through it! You can't know how many people are thinking of you and loving you as you help this angel with the treatment; there are thousands who are praying every day for "better days ahead!" I know it may not help much to say these things, and I wish I could do much more! She is beautiful even sleeping, and I want to thank you for the blog, for sharing this journey, and for your tireless love and support for Avery as she battles …
