Day 5 - Cycle 3

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Sunday, November 10th

Early Sunday morning was extremely hard on Avery. We were up from about 12:15 am to 4:30 am battling diarrhea. She went through multiple changes of clothes and baths. Due to the excessive episodes, they drew a lab to check for C-diff. While we don't think that is what caused it, we wanted to be safe. This means that she is on contact restrictions until the lab is run on Monday. Contact restrictions are: no leaving the room, all hospital staff must wear gowns and gloves, and they must wash their hands with soap and water instead of alcohol based sanitizer.

After speaking with the team, they believe the stomach issues were caused by the switch to oral Magnesium. The oral version is notorious for causing diarrhea as the body can not absorb it fast enough. We have stopped that while we are inpatient and will stick with the IV Magnesium when needed. Her blood counts all remained stable overnight, so she did not receive a transfusion today. We expect she will need one in the coming days though as this is the point in the cycle when all counts start plummeting.

After being fever free and vomit free for 24 hrs, she vomited once and spiked another fever mid-afternoon. Her cultures from yesterday have not grown anything, and we hope they continue to remain that way. She began complaining of ear pain this afternoon as well. Her ear did not have signs of infection, but if it was an ear infection the Cefepine she is on would take care of that as well.

Overall, she was pretty tired most of the day and spent much of the day resting. She did get to play some games and make some slime. Shon and I were even able to coax a few smiles as well.

Tomorrow we will continue to manage side effects, push the bi-carb fluids to help clear the Methotrexate and keep her in good spirits. Her Methotrexate level was 3.2 today, and it must be less than .1 before we can go home. That is a little higher than it normally is at this point, so between that and the fever, we are guaranteed a few more nights here.

Avery fell asleep a little early tonight and is resting peacefully. We had to move rooms after she was asleep due to some small bugs we found in our other room. Luckily she slept through the entire move.

Please continue to pray for:

- No more fever

- No more nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

- More energy and smiles tomorrow

- No positive bacteria cultures
