Day 7 - Cycle 1

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Tuesday, September 17th

Overall, Avery had one of her best days yet while at the hospital. She got sick first thing this morning, but it didn't seem to slow her down any. She went to school for an hour and a half, followed by ornament making with Smile-a-Mile, then to the Teddy Bear Clinic hosted by Spire, and then we ended the day visiting the claw machine(where we won a prize) and playing air hockey.

Her methotrexate level was .28 this morning, and we have to be below .1 to be able to go home. Pending no issues, we should be going home tomorrow! Her platelets, ANC and other labs all looked good which explains her boost in energy today.

We completed our education/training today in preparation to go home, which included learning how to give injections as she will require a daily injection of Neupogen(to boost her white blood cells). I am praying that this will not turn into a traumatic ordeal every day, and she will quickly adjust to this new routine.

Right before bedtime, she broke out into an itching fit. She was screaming and scratching hysterically and couldn't be calmed. She was so pitiful. A quick injection of Benadryl in her line stopped the itching and put her fast to sleep. We are not sure what triggered this. She has a small rash on her abdomen that we have been keeping an eye on, but we are unsure if this episode was related or not. Hopefully she is able to rest soundly tonight following such a big day.

We will have her levels checked again in the morning. If we are cleared to leave, she will receive a quick infusion of Vincristine(chemo) before we head home. As long as she stays well, we shouldn't have to return until next Wednesday to clinic for her last dose of Vincristine this cycle.

Please continue to pray for:

- Side effects of the medicines to be minimal and manageable

- Increased appetite once we get home

- Protection from illnesses and germs

- Cooperation with daily injections

- Smooth transition back to life at home

- That we don't wind up back in the hospital before our next cycle begins

Prayers for everything to go well tonight and in the morning so that Avery will be able to go home where she will feel more comfortable being at home with her family. Praying also for her sweet sisters and parents of course. May God’s peace surround each of you so that you can get some much needed rest.
