Eight Months

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Tuesday, April 14th

It was exactly eight months ago yesterday that our lives were forever changed. The filter in which we had been viewing/living our lives was abruptly torn away, and we were forced to view the world for what it sometimes is... cruel, harsh, and unfair.

I can think about that day, and all of the details and emotions come rushing back like it was yesterday. Sometimes it feels unreal. But then I look at our beautiful bald-headed little girl, and it doesn't get more real than that.

I wish I could say that the fear, pain, and worry from those early days is gone, but it's all still there. We've learned to quiet it some along the way, but it's always waiting to reemerge when you let your guard down. We try to choose to make the most of each day that we have rather than to live in fear of what the future may hold. Cancer is not a journey that ends when treatment is over or your hair grows back. Cancer will be part of Avery's life forever. Perspective is both a beautiful and heartbreaking thing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have been home from the hospital for nearly 7 weeks now. This is the longest stretch we have had at home since our journey began. Avery is doing so well. She feels great and is getting stronger by the day! Thanks to eLearning, she is able to finish out the Kindergarten year with her classmates(virtually). Her appetite is slowly coming back, and we are trying a new schedule with her feeds to encourage her to eat more. Her personality has also come back in full force! She typically wakes up happy and goes to sleep happy. She is always able to find joy even when the rest of us can't!

May will be a big month for Avery as she will have her 3 month MRIs and LP. We are trusting and believing that she will remain cancer free!

Please continue to pray for:

- Safety and strength for our health care workers

- Protection for Avery from illness

- Clear scans next month

You have a beautiful little girl! You have THREE beautiful little girls, and Avery looks happy as she can be! I don't wonder that she is thriving with being at home with her family and her familiar things; all of us long for "home." It has to be a miracle each time you look at her and think of how far you all have come in the journey this far! I pray for all you asked for, and I am so hoping that she goes into and stays in complete remission with NO cancer anywhere ever again. Sending love and prayers to you all and for you all!

Praise God from whom ALL blessings flow! Lori Beth thank you so much for this wonderful update. Today I am crying tears of JOY for precious Avery. She has been such a trooper. Just hearing she is feeling joyful throughout the day is such a precious blessing. Please give her a hug from her Dad’s kindergarten teacher. I have and will continue to thank God for a miracle. Love to the twins too. I know they have been so wonderful during Avery’s challenges. So thankful they are enjoying being together at home. God bless you all! Prayers continue daily for you all.
