Avery's pain continued to worsen last night. They changed her scheduled pain meds to every 3 hours which seemed to help ease it. After that, she was finally able to rest some.
They took her down to the OR around 8am. It was a very quick and successful procedure. Luckily, she did not require an external drainage tube, so she just as a small puncture wound that was left open to allow for any further drainage. She will continue on the IV antibiotics for an unknown number of days to ensure everything is properly cleared.
She was in a lot of pain and very angry when she made it back. I didn't get the full story, but somehow in recovery her NG dressing got ripped almost completely off. They did a very poor job of replacing it just using the broken tender grips and a piece of surgical tape. Luckily, we were able to fix it as soon as she got to the room which helped settle her some. Finally her pain meds kicked in, and she fell asleep shortly after 11. She continued to sleep until 6:30 this evening.

Her platelets were 54 today(very close to her threshold), so they transfused a unit in the OR. Her hemoglobin was good, and her sodium was back up to 138. Her ANC had risen to 60. Hopefully this is a sign of recovery, and things will take off for the better from here.
Her pain seems to be subsiding some and receiving pain meds every 3 hours is managing her pain well. She didn't need any extra doses for break through pain, so we will likely move her to every 4 hrs tomorrow and slowly start to wean her off. She has still not gotten out of bed or sat up, but I am hoping in a day or two she will start feeling like moving again.
She doesn't want her head shaved yet, but she has pulled out or rubbed out probably 80% of her hair. She thinks it is hilarious, and we may not even need to shave it when she's done. Despite her tubes, scars, port, and bald head, she is perfectly content with who she is, and we love her for that! She could teach us all a lesson in self confidence and humility!
Please continue to pray for:
- Continued pain relief
- ANC to keep rising
- Wisdom and guidance for the next steps of treatment
- Protection from illness and infections
- Rest
