Neutropenic Day 5

Monday, September 7th

Avery battled stomach cramps most of the night. She slept, but she did not rest well. As soon as she woke this morning, she vomited. Luckily, she didn't lose her tube and seemed to feel much better after that. We decided to add Aloxi to her regimen to help with the continued nausea.

Her platelets were 41, so we started the day with a platelet transfusion at 3:30 am. Her Hemoglobin took a nice jump from yesterday's blood transfusion, so no blood was needed today. Her ANC dropped back down to 0, but she has remained fever free. Her blood cultures finally resulted in a bacteria type of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They switched her back to the antibiotic Cefepime. Since her line isn't being constantly used, they have also switched to a Gentamicin(antibiotic) lock instead of heparin. This will hopefully help kill any lingering bacteria in her line.

Overall, she had a decent day. She worked on a new Lego set and watched some TV most of the day. She even ate one bite of a donut.

She started feeling nauseous around 5:30pm, so they gave her a dose of Benadryl to help. She fell asleep and slept until a little after 9pm. I was glad she was able to catch up on some much needed rest.

Her stomach troubles are the biggest issue impacting how she feels right now. She isn't able to sleep soundly due to cramping and having to get up to go to the bathroom. Her poor bottom is very raw. We are using barrier wipes, creams, and even rinsing off in the shower to try and help, but she's still in pain. We are hoping that tomorrow will provide a little more relief.
