Relapse Cycle 2 - Day 3

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Friday, October 2nd

Early Friday morning was a struggle with little to no rest. We made it to Special Care and got settled in between 1am and 2am. Avery battled with stomach cramps all night. She was also up 3-4 times to use the bathroom. I tried my best to keep the pulse ox on her, but that proved to be a challenging task. We were both exhausted most of the day.

Her 1am sodium draw showed that her sodium had stabilized. It has been stable since then, and we hope it will continue to be. She was going to have to go up to 10.5 grams a day of oral sodium, but we worried that would prove to be super tough on her stomach. After some brainstorming, they got rid of her oral supplements and started using a continuous infusion of normal saline to help her achieve the daily intake goals.

Both her hemoglobin and platelets had dropped, but neither required an infusion. We reduced her feeds to half the normal rate and added a new medicine in hopes of alleviating her stomach cramps. It seems to have helped some but not alleviated them completely.

Avery did not feel well most of the day. She did a lot of napping and watching the iPad. She shared a couple of giggly and smiley moments, but there weren't too many of those today.

She received her last dose of Cyclophosphamide , and she received her oral chemos as well. She has 4 more days of oral chemo and will receive one more IV chemo on Day 8.

We had to wake her from a hard nap this evening for the mandatory COVID test. They had not done one yet and had put up contact precaution signs on our door this morning. When I asked the nurse, she found out that someone had recorded that we had refused the test. Needless to say, Avery was tested, and hopefully the results will come back tomorrow so they can enter the room without all of the PPE.

We had a couple more exciting episodes today which ended up with blood dripping on the bathroom floor, and Avery and her bed being covered in blood. Luckily neither was a major event, but it was just a reminder that Avery likes to keep us all on our toes.

Please continue to pray for:

- Relief from stomach cramps

- Continued stable sodium levels

- Tumor and disease reduction from chemo

- Rest

What a fighter and a brave little girl you have! I am ordering the calendar; I love her July photo there! I hope that this stay in the hospital is as easy as possible, that she has no more pain or cramps, that Mama gets some rest when she can, and I pray for all things on your list! God has this!!!!!

Prayers for a good day today and nothing very exciting to happen. Just as ordinary as possible for a change and a pain free day with lots of rest for both. Hope COVID is negative.
