Transplant Day -5

Sunday, January 19th

Avery had another good night and slept soundly. She didn't wake up until close to 11:30 am. Overall she felt pretty good today. Around noon, they had to change her line dressing and NG dressing in preparation for the Thiotepa. She fought and objected as expected, but they were able to quickly get it changed. The new dressing they use is breathable and will come off much easier when it is time for her baths.

She handled receiving the Thiotepa and Etoposide with no issues. She once again did great with vitals and mouth care, even with all the extra vitals needed during the Etoposide. She earned another 2 letters today and a special prize.

She vomited shortly after her nightly meds at 8pm. We weren't sure if it was due to the meds or a side effect from the chemo, but they were able to give her something to hopefully ward off anymore sickness.

Her 10pm bath was both quick and traumatic... it didn't help that she had fallen asleep 10 minutes before. Luckily the nurses knew what they are doing and worked as efficiently as possible. They bring in a tub of water, soap, and a stack of wash cloths and towels. While she lays(or kicks or flails or rolls) in bed, they tag team soaping her up, changing out wash cloths often. They rinse her and pat her dry. Then she moves to sit in my lap (while I wear a chemo gown), and they strip her linens and wipe everything down. Next they change her line dressing(which has to be done while wearing masks and as sterile as possible) and her NG dressing. She decided to skip the clothes tonight, so I got her into a pull up and back asleep by 10:30. Of course, in the process of all of this, she vomited 2 more times. We will repeat this process at 4am, 10am, 4pm, and 10pm until 24hrs hours after her last Thiotepa infusion is complete. This should make her last bath around 4pm on Wednesday.

Please continue to pray for:

- No more nausea or vomiting

- No burns or skin irritation

- That she will tolerate the baths and dressing changes(1 down only 11 more to go)

- That she is able to rest in between

Lori Beth, keeping up with all your postings has helped me realize all the steps in this journey of children with cancer. As another step has begun, my prayers for rest, calmness, and that all Avery's numbers stay where they need to be. May she experience no skin irritation, no more vomiting, and rest for you both. Continuing prayers and love
