Transplant Day -8

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

Thursday, January 16th

Avery slept well last night and rested until we had to get her out of bed at 8am for her twice a day weigh in. She started her first chemo of the cycle, Carboplatin, around 9 am. It ran over four hours. She will receive this same treatment for the next 2 days.

Overall, she felt great all day. She played games and was silly and playful all day long. She did great with vitals as well. She did give us trouble with mouth care , but her nurse and I worked together to get it done every four hours as needed. A quick trip after work to Target to stock up on some squishies proved to be the perfect remedy for her resistance. After her daily bath and bedding change, she brushed her own teeth and let the nurse push all of her nightly meds through her NG tube with no fuss. This earned her a new squishy from the stash which had her over the moon.

They added Olanzapine to her nightly meds in preparation for the impending nausea and vomiting the Carboplatin is sure to bring in the next day or so. As wonderful as it was to see her feeling great today, we are nervous and dreading for the side effects to hit. Thankfully Avery doesn't remember what is to come.

In the past week alone, we've seen children being newly diagnosed, children who have relapsed, and 2 sweet children who have gone to be with Jesus. These are all children local to Alabama... they are our neighbors, our children's classmates, the people we pass everyday. We never realized that devastation could come on so quickly and cruelly, but that is exactly what cancer did. The one thing that surprised us the most though was the unwavering love and support that has been extended... from the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff here at Children's, from our friends and community, from our church, and from perfect strangers. Even in the midst of a terrible situation, we are still blessed immensely, and hope to one day be given the opportunity to pay it forward.

Please continue to pray for:

- No nausea and vomiting

- No additional hearing loss

- Protection of her body from the toxicity of these chemos

- All the brave warriors and their families fighting this fight

Some difficulties and sufferings come and then pass. Others come and stay. And Stay. We can only go to our Heavenly Father and his Word for comfort and hope. Psalm 30:5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope. Praying not only for your sweet Avery, but all the other children facing a journey like hers. Love and my daily prayers

I go to bed every night and wake everyday with you all jn my thoughts and in my prayers. Praying God’s protection over Avery that the harsh chemicals will not cause her added issues and as I do everyday I will continue to pray for a miracle of complete healing for your little girl and for those that are fighting this fight as well. Praying for God’s peace to surround you in a mighty way.
