Week 3 - Radiation

Writer: Lori Beth RicheyLori Beth Richey

12 radiation sessions down, and only 18 more to go! Avery is continuing to handle things like a champ! We leave the house at 5:55 am each weekday, and 3 days a week we don't make it home until after noon. She's a little grumpy when she first gets up, but by the time we are on the road, she is smiling and jamming out to Kidz Bop music.

She began vomiting in the middle of the night last Sunday and followed the same pattern Monday and Wednesday nights. We were able to add a second dose of steroids each day which seems to have gotten things under control.

The steroids are also giving her more energy, so despite being sedated each day, she has had enough energy most afternoons this week to ride her bike 1-2 miles and try to get caught up on some missed school work.

It was another busy week, but we are getting adjusted to the new schedule:

Monday - Radiation followed by clinic for labs. We also went to the surgery clinic to get her g-tube replaced, and now I've been trained to replace it should it come out on accident at home.

Tuesday - Radiation

Wednesday - Radiation. Clinic for labs, her weekly Vincristine(chemo), platelets, and IV fluids.

Thursday - Radiation

Friday - Radiation and clinic for labs, We were able to move the Proton Center, and she will continue the remainder of her radiation sessions there.

Tuesdays and Thursday are obviously her favorite days because we are home by 8:30 or 9. Avery has gotten so used to how quickly things seem to move at radiation(she doesn't realize she's asleep for nearly an hour) that she is getting very impatient waiting at Clinic. We are hoping that we may be able to transition to 2 clinic days a week soon, but that may not be possible. Her WBC continues to drop, so we are giving Neupogen injections every other night to keep her in a safe range and avoid anything that might land us in the hospital.

We are ready to take on another week and cross over that midway point for radiation!

Please continue to pray for:

- Minimal side effects from radiation

- Continued count recovery

- Complete healing

My prayer is that God will grant this sweet child a miracle of complete healing when all of her chemo and radiation is finished. She must be one strong little fighter to have gone through all she has faced and still is able to smile. Her willpower should be an inspiration to all of us. Seeing her out riding her bike and smiling is a miracle as well. God please continue to bless Avery and her mom and dad and the family!
